COVID-19 (Novel Coronavirus) - Re: PDAC Convention

FROM TBNEWS WATCH  -  March 11, 2020

Several Northwestern Ontarians including Mayor Renald Beaulieu were at the Toronto conference as well as a Sudbury resident who later tested positive for the Coronavirus. Mayor Beaulieu would like to assure Greenstone residents that the municipality is working diligently on determining what precautions, if any, are to be taken at this time. IT IS IMPORTANT TO NOTE THAT AFTER OVER THREE WEEKS (21 days) POST TRAVEL NEITHER THE MAYOR OR OTHER TWO MUNICIPAL EMPLOYEES HAVE SHOWN ANY SYMPTOMS.  All suggested protocols issued by Health Canada and the Ontario Ministry of Health have been adhered to.

THUNDER BAY – The Thunder Bay District Health Unit is asking anyone who attended the annual Prospectors and Developers Association Canada convention in Toronto earlier this month to self-monitor themselves for the novel coronavirus.

In a release issued on Wednesday afternoon, the health unit said they are aware that an attendee from Sudbury was diagnosed with COVID-19.

The self-monitoring should remain in place until March 18. The conference ran from March 1 to March 4.

“At this time, we don’t have any indication of a significantly elevated risk of COVID-19 exposure at the PDAC convention,” says Janet DeMille, medical officer of health at TBDHU.

“I would encourage people to remain calm in these circumstances. We are actively working with local community partners to effectively respond when situations like this arise.”

Anyone who was either at the convention or may have been in contact with someone who was there develops symptoms is asked to contact TBDHU at 625-5900 or 1-888-294-6630 or call Telehealth at 1-866-797-0000 and we will help access testing and treatment.

Symptoms include cough, fever and/or shortness of breath.

The health unit says it is working in conjunction with Public Health Sudbury and Districts and other northern health units and say they will provide further updates as they become available.

The public is encouraged to follows TBDHU’s Facebook and Twitter pages for the most up-to-date information.
